The next version of Android, with new optimizations of power and performance and many new ways to extend its applications.
There are many improvements in Android O. Many of these are improvements in the app, but here is a list of those focused on creating more fluid experiences.
Fluent Android experiences
It's pretty amazing what you can do on mobile devices today, and how easy it is to trust them like computers in our pockets. In version O we have focused on creating fluid experiences that make Android even more powerful and easy to use, and today we have highlighted some of them:
- Picture-in-picture: allows users to manage two tasks simultaneously, either by video calling their friend while reviewing their calendar or by reading a new recipe while viewing a video about a specific cooking technique. We have designed PIP to provide transparent multitasking on any screen size, and it is easy for applications to support it.
- Notification points extend the scope of notifications, a new way for developers to perform activities on the application surface that promote participation. Built on our unique and highly regarded notification system, the dots work with zero effort for most applications - we even extract the color of the dot from its icon.
- Autocomplete with Google simplifies setting up a new device and synchronizing passwords using the Chrome Autofill feature on Android. Once the user opts, the autocomplete function will work for free for most applications. Developers can optimize their applications for Autofill by providing suggestions on the type of data expected or adding support in custom views.
- A new home screen for Android TV makes it easy for users to search, preview and view content provided by applications. Applications can publish one or more channels and users can control the channels that appear on the home screen. You can start creating channels using the new TvProvider support library APIs.
- Smart text selection: On Android O, we apply device learning to Copy / Paste to allow Android to recognize entities such as addresses, URLs, phone numbers, and email addresses. This makes the copy and pastes experience better by selecting the entire entity and the surface of the appropriate applications to perform an action based on the entity type.
- TensorFlow Lite: As Android continues to leverage automatic learning to enhance the user experience, we want our development partners to do the same. Today we share an early look at TensorFlow Lite, a forthcoming project based on TensorFlow, Google's open source machine learning library. TensorFlow Lite is specifically designed to be fast and lightweight for built-in use cases. Since many device scenarios require real-time performance, we are also working on a new neural network API that TensorFlow can leverage to accelerate computing. We intend to make both available to developers on a maintenance upgrade to O later this year, so stay tuned!
